HexoSynth – An Open-Source Modular Synth

HexoSynth is an open-source modular synthesiser plugin (VST3, CLAP) similar in concept to VCVRack or The Grid in Bitwig.

The plugin’s interface allows users to arrange DSP modules on a hexagonal tilemap and connect them at the edges to route audio signals and control signals to inputs of other modules. Instead of hosting existing plugins, the project team aim to supply a comprehensive set of predefined modules. The ultimate goal of the project is to provide a simple wireless environment to build sound effects, synthesizers or whole generative music patches from predefined modules.

The project is still under active development, but working builds are available. Current features include:

  • A useable GUI which allows users to set parameters and place modules on a hexagonal module/node matrix.
  • VST3/CLAP plugins for use in most DAWs.
  • Signal monitors for the selected node.
  • Per node and output signal feedback LEDs.
  • A primitive sample selection browser.
  • Prototype of the WBlockDSP visual programming language for DIY DSP nodes inside HexoSynth.
  • Over 25 DSP modules, including mixers, filters, modulators, effects modules and an oscilloscope.

The developer, WeirdConstructor, has made the project available under a GPL license. For more info visit the project page on GitHub.
